What is PRP

Platelet Rich Plasma, also known as “PRP”, is an injection treatment in which a person’s own blood is used to improve various conditions by concentrating healing factors and stimulating collagen production.

PRP for pain/injury.   

Several studies have indicated that it is effective at healing tendon, bursa, and joint-related injuries. It has even been shown to be effective at improving pain from osteoarthritis. A series of three treatments is often required for best results.

PRP for hair regrowth.     

Injections with PRP also help people suffering from hair loss (androgenic/androgenetic alopecia) by stimulating and "fertilizing" the failing hair follicle. Of course, it takes time to regrow hair naturally, so expect to need 3 treatments, with results 4-6 months from start of treatments. There is no guarantee of desired results, but several studies show that this treatment works in those with patchy hair loss or receding hairline. 

PRP for skin. 

PRP goes further than microneedling to improve skin's appearance. When used for skin, it has been shown to have overall rejuvenating effects including:

• Improving skin texture to a more youthful appearance

• Decreasing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

• Increasing tissue volume by stimulating collagen and elastin production

• Decreasing and improving the appearance of scars

• Improving texture and thickness to skin damaged by radiation therapy

What to expect during your procedure. 

Approximately 30-60ml (approx 2-4 tablespoons) of blood will be drawn in our office using the same technique as would be used for a routine blood draw. The blood is then spun in a centrifuge to separate its components. The “platelet rich” plasma portion will be drawn and used for the procedure. This part of your blood is rich with healing and growth factors. The skin will be sterilized.  The plasma will then be injected into your areas of concern with a small needle.  In cosmetic procedures, microneedling will sometimes be performed as well, to ensure ample penetration of the remaining serum. Repeat treatments may be recommended based on clinical response.
